Scottish Work

We have been designing houses in Scotland for over twenty years and have extensive experience with renewable technologies, natural building materials and working in sensitive locations.

We actively promote sustainable, timber frame self build and high quality affordable housing.

We specialise in the design of contemporary and traditional timber frame buildings using green oak or locally-sourced Douglas fir.

Eagle Rock

This breathtaking new glulam framed house on the west coast of Scotland represents a stunning new development in our work.

The elliptical plan house blends into the high landscape with moss sedum roofs and lime-harled battered walls. The house enjoys 20 mile panoramic views from all rooms across the Sound of Mull to Tobermory and beyond.

Cop26 House

The zero-carbon, timber-frame COP26 House was developed as part of the two-week COP26 event in Glasgow in November 2021. The house was built to showcase zero carbon, circular solutions in building, and living, using natural materials, technology and skills we already have readily available today in the UK.

Artist’s Residence

A simple oak framed extension continues the exterior language of an existing Arts and Crafts house. However, this modest exterior conceals a dramatic new vaulted oak framed living room.

The woodburner focal point, wooden floors and dark-grey walls create a cosy space with the benefit of natural top light from new rooflights.

Gadgirth House & Poolhouse

Impressive green oak house and poolhouse in Ayrshire.

This oak framed house has an interesting layout creating an external courtyard with the poolhouse on one side. The swimming pool is set within an oak framed barn with gallery at one end.

Tigh Crom

An exciting curved contemporary oak framed house in the Highlands forming part of the Achabeag sustainable housing development.

This house curves to face the dramatic views of the sea and the Sound of Mull opposite.

The house is constructed with an exposed green oak frame internally and hemp insulation filled wall and roof panels, with a moss sedum roof finish to the rear.

Tigh Darach

A stunning example of our Evolution house design with a two storey central core and a wraparound single storey lean-to with external covered verandahs on the corners.

Oak framed house Tigh Darach is available to rent as a holiday let in the Highlands.

Tigh Na Mara

Exciting upside-down timber framed house on the west coast of Scotland.

This grid-formed house has earth banking against ground floor masonry structure and first floor green oak frame with full height glazing affording dramatic views over the river.

R-Affordable

The R-Affordable House brings together contemporary design, socially responsible construction and high-performance building products to deliver a quality affordable house. This house is economical to run and uses sustainable materials in an innovative way.

The desire for a spacious, user-friendly house, was at the heart of our client’s decision to self-build on this beautiful plot overlooking the Sound of Mull.

Self-contained Bothy in Scotland

Bothy

A small, but perfectly formed, 6 x 6m Douglas fir bothy erected as a walker's retreat on a small island off the west coast of Scotland. The bothy is self-contained and completely off-grid. The resting adventurer can enjoy a small galley kitchen, fully-functioning shower room and cosy, open plan living area with a feature log burner. The walls of the retreat are clad in Douglas fir weatherboarding and the roof is finished with western red cedar shingles.
